In a follow up to our blog last month about a proposed plastic bag ordinance (read it here), this week, South Portland City Council approved a 5-cent plastic and paper bag fee and a ban on polystyrene packaging.
South Portland is set to be the second Maine city to charge for plastic bags. They’re not alone, though, as more than 150 cities and towns nationwide have embraced reusable shopping bags. More than 100 have banned polystyrene.
Retailers will keep the 5-cent fee levied on all paper and plastic bags.
Way to go, South Portland!
